"It is incredibly tricky to find the right balance when it comes to triathlon training and racing. Ever since I began triathlon, I have either overestimated my nutrition requirements and stacked on the weight, or reduced my food intake drastically and haven't had the energy required for training and racing. This has led to injuries and has also impacted on performance.
12 months ago I began training with a squad in Newcastle with the aim of competing in my first half-Ironman triathlon in January 2011. I contacted Alicia from Compeat nutrition and within days I had completed a food diary and had a detailed, personalised nutrition program that took into account my specific nutrition requirements. Every meal was taken care of and the program came complete with some really tasty recipes.
I soon became aware of the mistakes I was making and the impact this was having on my ability to train, the quality of my training and my performance in races. I have now completed numerous races from sprint distance to ultimate distance and I credit my ability to get through the long races to Alicia's program. Alicia provided advice that helped with weight loss, carb loading and race nutrition. All too often you hear about athletes 'blowing up' or 'hitting a wall' and in many cases this is a result of poor nutrition. I feel confident that if I stick to my nutrition plan I won't have to worry about this.
